In the end, I stayed for the story (and it IS romantic). I'm not a huge fan of slow burn (which this absolutely is) OR very much into "clean romance," which this absolutely is, but I do love a good story, which this also is. If you've already read them and just want the audiobook for a re-read, buy with confidence. The third book is due to be released soon on audiobook, and there is a hellish cliffhanger on this one. If you are new to the series, consider waiting just a smidge to listen. Pro tip: Go to the author's website and download the short story that tells the events of the first few chapters of the first book from his POV before beginning this one. It also has sections told from Farendel's POV. The world has been established, the characters have been introduced. Book two is different from book one in a number of ways-it's more plot driven, for one. I didn't feel the need to do that with the first book. I dialed the speed down to 90% and was happy. The only complaint I have is that sometimes her voice for Essie is too fast, passing from rapid chatter into something manic. This one was as solid as the first in terms of variety of voices and a crisp reading. I'd been waiting for this one to be released, having read the first three books of the series already, and having enjoyed the audiobook of the first quite a bit.
